Lower Silesia is full of unique attractions, and the Trail of Dying Competitions in Kudowa is undoubtedly one of them. This is a magical place where you can proverbially move back in time and see how clay dishes were once made, horseshoes were forged, or bread was baked. Why else is it worth visiting them?

What is the Trail of Dying Occupations?

The Trail of the Dying Occupations is an agritourism farm belonging to Urszula and Bogusław Gorczyński, where in several buildings objects and elements of equipment related to the former occupations of the population, including lacemaking, weaving or blacksmithing were collected. There are also demonstrations of obtaining flour, baking bread and butter making, which is a great variety compared to other attractions that Kudowa-Zdrój has to offer. The Dying Trail is also an opportunity to visit the mini-zoo, where pheasants, chickens, sheep, goats and other rural animals are bred.

What are the perishing professions?

Despite the fact that many former professions and activities of the population in the countryside are no longer practiced, the memory of them is still alive, and special demonstrations of crafts and exhibitions of objects related to them are very popular among locals and tourists. A great example of this is the Trail of Dying Occupations (Kudowa-Zdrój), where you can see, among others:

  • Pottery — this occupation consisted of making clay vessels using a potter's wheel and various molding techniques. In this way, bowls, cups and jugs were created, among others.
  • Blacksmithing — blacksmith dealt with the broadly understood metal processing. He made tools (nails, axes, axes and others), household items, as well as forging horseshoes and horseshoes. He also repaired equipment and appliances from metal.
  • Weaving — limited availability of finished materials and economic considerations meant that fabrics were usually made by themselves, with the help of looms. Weaving was a tedious and demanding occupation, but sometimes real wonders, including decorative, multi-colored tapestries and carpets, came out from the fingers of the people involved.
  • Lace making — hand creation of crochet or needle lace required a lot of craftsmanship, but it allowed to create finesse patterns that could take the form of drapes, tablecloths or clothing accessories.
  • Bakery — until a few decades ago baking bread was a common occupation, and probably there was no hostess who did not have her proven recipe for this baking. Before the era of ovens, bochny was put in a wood-fired bread oven, from where they came out soft and fragrant, and usually with a deliciously baked crust.
