It is a paradise for drivers and motorcyclists, offering breathtaking views and an exciting route through picturesque landscapes. Where exactly is the Hundred Turns Road located and why is it so popular? We invite you to read.
The Way of the Hundred Turns — Characteristics
The Stu Zakrzytów Road, also known as the Sudecka Autostrada, is the popular name for a 23-km section of provincial road number 389 in the Sudeten Mountains, in southwestern Poland. It stretches through the picturesque areas of the Kłodzko Basin, connecting the individual localities of the region. Where does the Way of a Hundred Turns begin? In Kłodzko, Lower Silesian Voivodeship. From here runs a picturesque route, leading through the heart of the Table Mountains National Park , offering numerous turns and spectacular views, up to the village of Radków, where the Way of the Hundred Turns ends.
Route 387 is especially appreciated for its spectacular landscapes, offering views of the mountains, valleys and forests of the Sudetenland. The uniqueness of this route also lies in many cliffs and streamers, thanks to which the ride delivers unforgettable impressions and constitutes an adventure in itself. It is also worth knowing that only the Sudecka Highway leads to some of the attractions of the region. This route is often used by tourists as a starting point for excursions to the Table Mountains and other interesting places.
Sudecka Highway and its History
Construction of the route through the Germans began in 1867, when the region was an important economic and military center. However, it was not until three years later that the Way of the Hundred Turns was finally established. The Table Mountains and the surrounding area were strategically significant at the time for their natural resources and as a key communication point. The route originally served mainly for transporting raw materials and was used by the military.
In the second half of the 20th century, as automotive and tourism developed, the road began to gain importance as a tourist attraction. It has been expanded and adapted to the needs of increased traffic, improving its capacity and security. The streamers and numerous bends were a response to the difficult, mountainous terrain through which the road passes and today they are one of the main attractions offered by the Way of the Hundred Turns. Table Mountains attract motorized tourists, traveling by cars, motorcycles and even bicycles.
Attractions are on the Way of the Hundred Turns
The Hundred Turns Road leads through the Table Mountains, offering access to many attractions such as:
- Vicious Rocks — This is an assembly of rock labyrinths and corridors, formed by erosive processes acting on sandstone. It is a popular excursion destination, offering tourists the opportunity to walk among unusual rock formations. The path leads through narrow passages and between fancifully shaped rocks.
- Radkowskie Rocks — Less known, but equally picturesque rock formations near Radków. They are a great place for lovers of nature and photography, offering beautiful views of the surrounding Table Mountains.
- Rock Mushrooms — Characteristic mushroom-like rock formations that were formed by uneven weathering of sandstone. These natural sculptures are some of the most interesting examples of erosive nature works in the region, attracting the attention of tourists.
- Fort Karol — Prussian fort built in the 19th century, located near Kłodzko. It is part of the system of fortifications that make up the Festung Klodzko, designed to defend against possible attacks. Fort Charles offers an insight into the region's military heritage, allowing you to explore the surviving parts of the fort. Historical reconstructions are also sometimes organized there.
Is Route 387 passable?
Route 387 was not passable for some time. In February 2023, several tens of meters of retaining wall collapsed, which caused a landslide of the road and forced the closure of a section of the Way of the Hundred Turns. The Kłodzka Basin had to wait more than a year for the reopening of the route. Currently, however, the Sudecka Highway is completely passable and open to car traffic.
