Where are the Vicious Rocks located?

The Errant Rocks are located in the Table Mountains National Park, precisely in its western part, where Stoliwo Skalniak lies — the second largest massif of the Table Mountains. The rock labyrinth is located almost directly at the Czech border. The nearest villages are Karłów (about 3.5 km from the Błęne Rocks) and Kudowa-Zdrój (approx. 5.5 km from the Błęne Rocks). The distance from Zieleniec is about 26 km.

The entire area of the Burial Rocks covers an area of nearly 22 hectares. It consists of peculiar rock forms, reaching heights of 6 to even 11 m. Vicious Rocks are literally a labyrinth of alleys and crevices, very narrow places and located between giant rock blocks. Many of them have peculiar names, such as “Kurz Footer”, “Great Hall”, “Rock Saddle”, “Tunnel” or “Labyrinth”, referring to how they look. There is also a vantage point “Skalne Czasze” at the disposal of tourists, from which there is a picturesque view of Szczeliniec Wielki and Mały, Broumovska Vrchovina, and in good weather also the Krkonoše Mountains.

How old are the Vicious Rocks?

Vicious Rocks were formed about tens of millions of years ago. During the Upper Cretaceous period, the current area of the Table Mountains was a bay of shallow and extensive sea. The rivers flowing into it applied weathering material to the reservoir, which, as a result of natural processes, deposited on the bottom, which in turn led to the formation of coarse sandstones divided by fine-grained marls. Later, when the Alpine orogeny came, they were uplifted, as did the entire Sudetenland. Then the process of erosion began, as a result of which some of the rock material eroded under the influence of water, wind and temperature, creating rocks with fancy shapes, tight corridors and crevices. This process continues to this day.

In turn, legend has it that the Vicious Rocks were created by the hand of the ghost of the mountains — Liczyrzepa. It was he, angered, who led to the decay of a flat sandstone mountain into rock blocks. You can read more about this mythical figure in the article “Ghost of the Mountains, or Liczyrzep”.

How do I get to the Vicious Rocks? Access to the labyrinth is made possible by the famous Road of the Hundred Zakrotów, which is a part of the provincial road no. 378, connecting Ścinawka Ścinawka Medium and Kudowa-Zdrój.
