Zieleniec — routes for everyone

1. Walk around Zieleniec

Grunwald, and in the literal translation “Green Forest” — so even before the war it was called Zieleniec. Hiking routes around it also today lead through lush vegetation areas and surrounding hills. To see the town from the best side, we recommend going to Orlica, which is the highest point of the Polish Orlické Mountains (first along the red and then green trail). The route is not long and has a fairly gentle slope, so it is an ideal choice for families with children. However, it must be borne in mind that in winter conditions may be a little more demanding on it. Then it is worth equipping yourself with mini crawlers and trekking sticks, which will allow you to climb to the top efficiently.

An observation tower has recently been built on Orlica, which offers a picturesque view of the nearby mountain ranges and the surrounding villages. Taking advantage of this attraction is the perfect culmination of a tour!

2. Bohemian Maginot Line

In a place like Zieleniec, hiking trails connect to each other, allowing you to see every corner. Therefore, after climbing to the top of Orlica, it is worth going further along the red and later yellow trail to the Maginot Line located on the Czech side. These are fortifications and bunkers created in the 1930s, the purpose of which was to secure the area in case of attack by Nazi Germany. The “concrete border” runs along the highest points of the Orlické Mountains and there is a picturesque view of the Śnieżka Massif, as well as the Bystrzyckie Mountains. Traversing it, you can climb to Anenský Vrch, located at an altitude of 992 m above sea level.

3. Shelter Masarykowa Chata

Recommended hiking routes in Zieleniec in most cases hook for this place. And it is not surprising, because apart from the rich offer, the Masarykov Cottage is also a valuable architectural object. Its sightseeing is best combined with an excursion to Orlica, since it is only a 10-minute walk away.

4. Peat bog near Zieleniec

What does Zieleniec offer walkers? Trails with very interesting sightseeing features include the peat bog located on its territory. The reserve, with an area of nearly 232 hectares, can be traversed practically all year round, but it makes the greatest impression on tourists in autumn, when it impresses with warm colors, as well as in spring, when nature wakes up to life in it after the winter break. The bog in Zieleniec is a unique place on the map of Poland. It is about 7,600 years old and is considered a glacial relic. Its unusual vegetation, compared to the Arctic tundra or the Siberian tundra, can be admired by walking along special wooden footbridges.

5. Solna Jama Cave and the ruins of Shcherba Castle

In the place, which is Zieleniec, hiking trails intersect with interesting attractions. One such route leads to a small but picturesque Salt Cavity. The cave is located on the slopes of Mount Czerniec, at an altitude of about 585 m above sea level. It is formed by marble rocks of bright color, the appearance of which brings to mind salt — that is why the name of the attraction came from. Walking towards Solna Jama, you can take a moment to see the Ruins of Szczerba Castle located along the route. However, you need to be careful not to stray, after the paths are very poorly marked.
