When is the Moniuszko Festival held in Kudowa?
This year's International Moniuszko Festival in Kudowa-Zdrój lasts 3 days and takes place from 24-26 August 2023. Its patron is the composer Stanisław Moniuszko (1819-1872), considered the forerunner of Polish national opera.
During his life, Moniuszko composed many works, which today are known all over the world. He is the author of operas (“Halka”, “Terrible Manor”), operettas (“Lottery”, “Accommodation in the Apennines”) and ballets (“Monte Christo”), as well as songs (“Spinner”, “War Song”, “Black Cross”) and church music.
The first edition of the Moniuszko Festival was organized in 1962 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the composer's death. Since then, the event has not been held only once, during the period of martial law. This year it will take place for the 61st time.
Where is the Moniuszko Festival held?
Due to the varied program of the event, performances take place in several different places, mainly in the area or in the vicinity of the Zdrojowy Park, which is considered one of the most beautiful places that Kudowa-Zdrój has at all. In previous editions, the Moniuszko Festival was hosted, among others, in the Zdrojowy Theatre, the Concert Hall of the Mineral Water Pump Room, on the balcony of the Sanatorium “Polonia”, as well as in churches in Kudov, where concerts of church music were organized.
Is admission to the Moniuszko Festival free?
Admission to all events that take place as part of the Moniuszko Festival is available to the public and free of charge. This allows anyone who wants to take part in them. Until now, several thousand artists from various parts of Poland and the world have performed on the festival stage, who have presented the works of Stanisław Moniuszko and other great composers, including Giuseppe Verdi, Mykola Lysenko, Jacques Offenbach and Gaetan Donizetti.
What is the program of the Moniuszko Festival in Kudowia-Zdrój?
Moniuszko Festival, which guests Kudowa, surprises every year with a rich and extensive program. As part of the event, concerts, performances, recitals or meetings with invited guests and lectures devoted to the life and work of Stanisław Moniuszko are organized. The Moniuszko Pageant is also very successful, not only among the participants of musical events. It is attended, among others, by artists, city authorities, residents and tourists, some of whom are dressed in costumes referring to 19th-century fashion, when men wore tailcoats and surduts, and women delighted with colorful, spreading gowns complemented by decorative hats and umbrellas.
In turn, the musical face of the Moniuszko Festival focuses primarily on the work of its patron. However, you can also hear the works of other composers. Excerpts from operas, operettas, songs or other compositions are presented, among others. Every year a slightly different repertoire is prepared, thanks to which each Moniuszko Festival in Kudowa surprises with something new.
