When it comes to the Chopin Festival, Duszniki really has something to boast about! It is here that the oldest continuously operating piano festival in the world is organized. When is it held? What parties accompany him? See what attractions are prepared for this year!
When is the Chopin Festival held in Dusznika-Zdrój?
The International Chopin Festival in Duszniki Zdrój has been organized every year, at the beginning of August, continuously since 1946. It is a series of concerts and events accompanied by readings and lectures on Chopin's life and work. This year it takes place from 4-12 August 2023.
The first edition of the event was organized to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the concerts of young Fryderyk Chopin, when the pianist together with his mother and sisters visited Duszniki-Zdrój. At that time, the Chopin Festival lasted only 2 days, and its stars were exclusively Polish pianists. However, over time, this formula has evolved and today the event lasts 9 days, and during it the biggest stars of piano competitions from around the world perform.
Where is the International Chopin Festival held?
The Dusznice Chopin Festival always takes place in the same place — the Fryderyk Chopin Zdrojowy Theatre, also known as the Chopin Manor. This location was not chosen by chance. It was there, in August 1826, that a charity concert of the pianist was organized to help the children of the late Josef Schoor, who had previously been orphaned by their mother. This event was permanently inscribed in the history of the city, resulting in, among other things, the Chopin Festival. Angelines take care of the composer's memory, however, also in other ways. One of the springs of mineral waters was named after him, in turn, two monuments were erected near the Zdrojowy Theatre reminiscent of the concert that once took place here.
The building, which hosts the Chopin Festival in Duszniki Zdrój, is located in the central part of the Zdrojowy Park. Surrounded by more than 5 hectares of well-maintained greenery, it provides the perfect backdrop for blaring concerts. What is the programme of the Chopin Festival?
The International Chopin Festival, as in previous years, consists of piano concerts, lectures and accompanying events. One of them is the National Master Classes organized for promising young pianists.
Concerts as part of the Chopin Festival are usually held twice a day — at 16:00 and at 20:00. Their stars are the winners of the biggest piano competitions in the world. This year, among others, Yulianna Avdeeva, Kevin Chen, Frederico Colli, Giorgi Gigashvili, Yukine Kuroki, Mateusz Krzyżowski, Ilia Ovcharenko, Piotr Pawlak and Francesco Piemontesi will perform.
Apart from them, a special event is also organized, which additionally honors the Chopin Festival in Duszniki. Nocturne is a unique concert combining the soothing sounds of the piano with a story about the life of Fryderyk Chopin. At the same time, participants are accompanied exclusively by candlelight, so they can feel like at one of the social gatherings held in the same place, but in the 19th century.
