When attractions such as mines are supposed to come into play, the Kłodzka Basin comes first. This region is famous not only for beautiful mountains and atmospheric towns, but also rich underworld. What mines can be visited there? Which one is the most interesting? Discover our suggestions!

Where are the mines in Kłodzko?

The mines in the Kłodzko Basin are an important part of the region's heritage. The first mention of them appeared in the Middle Ages, when iron, copper, lead, silver or gold were mined here. Currently, some of the former mines have been made available for sightseeing, and thanks to the rich offer they are making a huge furor not only among tourists. What are the mines in the Kłodzko Valley?

Kłodzka Basin: Uranium Mine in Kletony

This is one of the biggest attractions that the Kłodzka Basin has to offer. The Uranium mine is located in the northern slope of Żmijowca in the Śnieżnik Massif, in the village of Kletno. It was founded in 1948 and for another 5 years (until closure) 20 tons of uranium were mined in it. In total, it included 20 adits and 3 shafts, partly using medieval infrastructure. Currently, you can visit the adit number 18, located on the road connecting Kletno and Sienna.

Compared to other mines in the Kłodzko Valley, this one is perhaps the most colorful. There you can admire illuminated mineral deposits, equipment and mining pints, as well as a collection of historical maps. Moreover, there are many attractions waiting for visitors. In addition to guided tours on the basic route, the mine also organizes night sightseeing, a fictionalized game for adults, a field quest, as well as workshops and activities aimed at different age groups.

How long does it take to visit the Uranium Mine in Kletony? The passage of the basic route takes about 40-45 minutes. Guided tours take place in groups of about 25 people. The entrances themselves are again organized approximately every hour.

Kłodzka Basin: Złoty Stok Mine

Another interesting place when it comes to mines and the Kłodzko Basin is Złoty Stok and the former arsenic and gold mine there. Opened to visitors almost 30 years ago, today it is an important point on the tourist map of the region. This is due not only to the unique environment, but also to the extensive offer. Visiting this place, you can not only walk along the basic tourist route and learn about the history of mining in Złoty Stok, but also see the Medieval Technology Park and enter the Ochrowa Aztolnia. The mine also offers underground boat rafting, an underground waterfall and additional activities: gold flushing, mineral exploration in the Diamond Field, or casting your own gold bar.

Kłodzka Basin: Museum of Mining Former Nowa Ruda Mine

Although mining was for a very long time about what the Kłodzka Basin is, the mines in which it is still mined are rare today. In the vicinity of New Ruda, for example, they were all liquidated in the 1990s. After time, however, care was made to open a museum in them. What can be seen in it?

The Museum of Mining in Nowa Ruda is divided into 2 parts — museum (aboveground) and underground. The first of them consists of 4 halls with exhibits relating to the history of mining and the history of the mine itself. In turn, the underground route shows what the work of the miners was like and even allows you to undertake it. The culmination of the sightseeing tour is riding a real mining coaster. Moreover, the museum also prepared quests, that is, sightseeing in the form of a field game with puzzles.

Underground of the Kłodzko Basin

However, the Sudeten underground is not only mines. The Kłodzka Basin is also famous for its beautiful caves and underground tunnels hollowed out as part of defensive fortresses (see: Srebrna Góra fortress) or underground complexes — such were the city of Osówka or Sztolnie Walimskie, part of the Nazi project “Riese”.
