Who's scaring in castles?

Ghosts in Polish castles are most often referred to as castle spirits. Following the legends and stories of people who stumbled upon beings not from this world in these places, these are most often white ladies, that is, women of extraordinary beauty in beautiful dresses, villainous (but also villainous), knights appearing in full gutter, unhappily in love, or enchanted princesses who can be disenchanted. A certain category is also made up of impersonal spectra manifesting their presence through sounds or traces. Many of the ghosts of Polish castles appear in the place of their former residence, others were again associated with a given location through tragic death, most often in very unpleasant circumstances.

Where's Kunegund scaring?

Kunegunda's ghost is scaring in Chojnik Castle. However, it is a much more haunted place — apart from the girl, some also saw a black spectre, which in shape resembles a knight on horseback. Its appearance is usually accompanied by mysterious firefights, the sound of hooves and lingering moans.

The appearance of ghosts, according to legends, has precisely to do with Kunegunda mentioned earlier. She was the daughter of one of the lords at Chojnik Castle and was famous for her not very pleasant disposition, not to say cruelty. Not wanting to get married, everyone trying to get her hand set a very dangerous and practically impossible task — they were to detour on horseback the steep slopes of the castle, which ended with a cliff falling into the Hell Valley. As it is easy to guess, many tried and many fell, falling with a loud scream.

After a few years, however, a knight appeared at the castle. Kunegunda fell in love with him at first sight, and her infatuation was so strong that she was ready to give up her previously set condition. Despite this, the man decided to fill it. However, this is a story without a happy end — after a successful attempt when the princess wanted to throw herself into the arms of her beloved, he rebuked her, saying that she could not imagine living with someone so cruel. The girl in despair threw herself into the abyss, sharing the fate she had previously prepared to stand in concury. Allegedly, to this day, on a boulder at the foot of the castle you can see the buttock print, which was formed during the fall of her body to the ground, and she herself wanders, unable to experience peace. Whereas the groans of the knights who died tragically echo from the Hell Valley, making Chojnice's estate one of the castles in Kłodzko, in which it frightens.

Haunted castles in the Kłodzko Valley

Castles and palaces in the Kłodzko Valley are particularly numerous, and consequently there are quite a lot of ghosts inhabiting them. In which of them do ghosts scare?

Grodno Castle

Some mysterious phenomena, such as a strange chill or the crackling and sounds resembling the crying of a child coming from one of the chambers, constitute a strong premise for the fact that someone or something is scaring in Grodno Castle. These phenomena may be associated with the person of Margaret, a beautiful castellanca, whom the father wanted to marry a rich, albeit old, nobleman. This woman, who had already fallen in love with the poor squire, did not want to agree to this proposal. The father's pressure was so great, however, that she, seeing no other way out, pushed the pretender to his hand from the castle walls while walking together, while claiming that it was an accident. Her father did not give faith to her words and locked her in a dark dungeon, where she died of starvation. Her spirit is now to wander through the corridors of the castle and wail behind her beloved squire, while making Grodno count into the castles in which she scares. However, Poland has more than one such story to tell.

Homole Castle

The ghosts of Polish castles are complemented by the spectre that once could be found within the walls of Homole Castle and the surrounding forest. The story itself is quite bloody, and it began with the meeting of the young, beautiful wife of the master at the castle and the knight who arrived in the guests. The woman and the man fell in love very quickly, but they painstakingly concealed their romance for fear of losing the riches and privileges they enjoyed. One autumn day, seeing an opportunity after one of the stuffy feasts, together they disposed of the old ruler, who died stabbed at the hands of his wife. She again became a lady at the castle and already married her beloved without hindrance. Their marriage, however, was not a happy one. Spent revelling and constant fun, it also ended quite abruptly — the knight, bored with his wife, stabbed her to death with the same dagger she used to kill her first husband. At the same time, he continued to lead the life of the loser, assaulting the passing merchants and creating in the palace the headquarters of knights and highwaymen. On the other hand, the lady died in tragic circumstances at Homole Castle began to appear twice a year, always on the same days and at the same time — at midnight on the anniversary of her and her first husband's death. The spell that bound her to the lock could be removed from it, and the person who did so was to receive the keys to the treasure-filled underworld. Since then, the woman has not appeared anymore, but does this mean that she left the ghosts of Polish castles for good and will never return again?

Palace in Trzebieszowice

Castles where ghosts frighten do not have to be forgotten and abandoned, as evidenced by the palace in Trzebieszowice. This is a magnificent mansion shrouded in an aura of mystery, where there is no shortage of stories about curses, vanity and incredible events. Who's scaring in the castle?

The whole story was supposed to take place at the time when the estate was in the hands of General Franz von Wallis. The man, in exchange for saving his life at the Battle of Bystrica in February 1744, invited a feldfebel of Croatian origin Jovan to his estate, allowing him to bring his beloved as well, so that after many years of separation they could finally be together. The girl's name was Neya and she was the daughter of a wealthy merchant of the Turkish Islamic faith and an Armenian woman who secretly raised her in the Christian faith. A few years earlier, together with Jovan, she fled home and, hiding from her father's wrath, took refuge in the Clarist Monastery in Znojmej, Moravia, where the prior was a relative of her beloved. Jovan enlisted again in the army and only after the end of the Silesian Wars, he was able to return for his beloved. Young people, at Wallis's invitation, went to live in Trzebieszowice.

During her years in the midst of nuns, Neya changed a lot. Whether through the curse of her father or the magical power she possessed in the monastery, reading the magic books, she became a heartless being and loved men in herself only to feel power over them. The first victim of the girl's charms was the Wallis' cousin, who, unhappily in love and rebuked by Neya, hanged himself from a tree in front of her bedroom. Likewise, Jovan ended his life distraught over what or who his beloved had become. A certain painter from Vienna, whom she also loved and abandoned, remained indifferent to the girl's charm. He hanged himself on exactly the same tree as his predecessors. As they were beheaded and Neya disappeared under mysterious circumstances, a scare began in the palace and surrounding park. This would probably be the case to this day, were it not for the efforts of the Harbuval-Chammare family, who after acquiring the mansion contacted a well-known spiritist. This made contact with Neya and the other entities. The wish of the spirits was to hold 100 memorial services, after them the visitations ceased. However, what some further claim to have seen a gentle haze gliding through the park, or heard the quiet clink of Neya's trademark bracelets...
